You may have come across the term “acoustic flooring solutions” when looking at flooring options for your next construction project. But what acoustic flooring solutions are available and what are they used for?
In our latest blog post, we take a closer look at acoustic flooring solutions to help you understand what acoustic flooring is used for. Read on to find out more and get yourself up to speed.
What is acoustic flooring?
Acoustic flooring is a type of flooring system that provides sound insulation between floors in buildings.
What are acoustic flooring solutions used for?
Acoustic flooring solutions are used to reduce the transfer of impact noise (such as footfall or furniture movement) from the floor structure to the room below. In addition, the transmission of airborne sound from TVs and voices can also be reduced.
What acoustic flooring solutions are available?
The most commonly used types of acoustic flooring solutions are:
- Under Screed Isolation: this solution is installed under floor screed and provides a soundproof layer between the screed and the main building structure to reduce vibrations being transmitted. As a result, the overall acoustic performance of the floor structure is improved.
- Acoustic Underlay Materials: this solution is installed under the flooring finish and above the building structure in order to reduce impact sound at the source. To get the most effective result in terms of durability and the best feel underfoot, the surface finish (such as laminate flooring or ceramic tiles) should always be considered when choosing the type of material for this solution, which can be made of cork and rubber.
- Acoustic Floating Floors: there are two types of floating floors, made of either concrete or timber. A floating floor is not glued or nailed to the subfloor (the building’s foundation or structure flooring), and the surface finish panels are attached together instead to keep them in place. Both materials create airspace which is then filled with materials such as coiled springs, neoprene or fibreglass pads to boost noise reduction. Some structures will not be able to support the weight of concrete floating floors and in these instances, timber floating flooring is used.
What else should I know about acoustic flooring solutions?
Acoustic flooring solutions are used in a range of buildings and construction projects. They are particularly effective in high traffic areas with several floors such as hospitals, schools, offices, hotels and retirement/care homes. They are effective in reducing noise up to 19dB (decibels), ensuring the highest quality soundproofing capabilities at a cost-effective price. In addition, acoustic flooring solutions can also deliver effective shock absorbing capabilities, making them extremely comfortable to walk on.
