What's the best underfloor heating to use?

The cost effective way to heat your latest construction project

What underfloor heating is best?

If you’re looking for a cost effective way to heat your latest construction project, then underfloor heating could be just the option that you’re looking for.

Made of the highest quality materials to ensure the best possible result for your needs, in our latest blog we take a look at underfloor heating in more detail to help you understand what underfloor heating is best for you. Read on to find out more.

What is underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating provides greater ambient temperature control. For heating, warm water is circulated through a series of looped pipes that are installed under the floor finish, within the screed.

As a result, a large radiant surface is created, and the floor area becomes a heat source from the ground upwards. In addition, water can also be set in reverse to cool the environment effectively, without having the disadvantages of air cooling systems, such as air pollution, noise and draughts. (not sure this is correct)

Where is underfloor heating used?

You might be surprised to learn that underfloor heating is the fastest growing segment within the heating industry, and it is currently used within several sectors such as education and health care, as well as in residential and retail developments.

What are the advantages of underfloor heating

The main advantage of underfloor heating systems is that it is possible to adapt them for use with alternative and renewable energy sources, such as ground/air source heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar energy systems, making them a much greener solution.

In addition, the need for unsightly wall mounted radiators is removed, and therefore there is much more freedom to design the remaining space of the room.

In terms of the effectiveness of heating, underfloor heating also provides a heat flow that is substantially more consistent and even, compared to standard wall mounted radiators.

What types of underfloor heating are there?

There are four main types of underfloor heating:

  • Tacker System: This is the most widely used underfloor heating system in the industry as a result of its versatility and ease of installation.
  • Wire Grid System: This system is used when the floor insulation panels for the Tacker system is not employed.
  • Clip Rail System: This system is made of plastic pipe-locating rails, which come with a self-adhesive backing for easier installation.
  • Diffusion plate System: This is used in timber floor constructions, where a screed is not viable

What else should I know?

You might be interested to know that underfloor heating systems offer significant benefits over traditional heating systems.

For example, they can reduce energy use by 15%-40% compared to standard radiators. In addition, the radiant heat that is produced by underfloor heating reduces air circulation and humidity, therefore airborne allergens and the likelihood of dust mites are reduced too.
